An Overview of Peru and Ecuador’s Parrotlets

white-fallow-turquiose-pied-male-parrotlet-621x450One of the most interesting things in the animal kingdom is that sometimes, “mini-versions” of well-known species actually exist. One of the best examples is the bird species called parrotlets, which is obviously a smaller version of parrots. These tiny yet colorful feathered birds are known to have originated from Peru and Ecuador. The presence of these birds in places such as the South America, Australia, Southeast Asia, and Africa suggest clearly that they thrive well in warm to semi-arid environments.

Among scientists, these birds are known as Forpus coelestis. On an average, an adult attains a body length of 5 inches with a wing span of 6 inches. The characteristic color is olive green. Currently, there are seven existing species that are scattered all over the regions mentioned above. These include the Blue Wings, Pacific (Celestial), Yellow Face, Mexicans, Spectacled, Green Rumps, and Sclaters. The most common one is the Pacific parrotlet. Most pet owners and hobbyists prefer this specie. The Blue Wings and Mexican species are difficult to find and it is highly unlikely that pet stores will sell them.

Several things made these birds popular among people. First of all, they are highly intelligent and can learn to speak like their parrot counterparts. They can form close bonds with their owners and are perfect as companion birds. Females, as an example, are dedicated to only one owner and will exhibit aggressive behavior towards others. Males have been proven to choose their favorite person, but will tolerate the presence and touch of others.

Secondly, their colorful feathers and petite size are good to look at. Color patterns in the body easily reveal whether a bird is a male or a female. The presence of a blue-cobalt hue or pattern on the head, eyes and wings indicate that the bird is male. A solid yellow hue on the parts mentioned indicates a female bird. There are also albino Pacific parrotlets that are popular at present.

Next, these birds are easy to keep and maintain as pets. They aren’t as noisy as parrots and canaries. This means that it is okay to keep them even in apartments or condominiums. Their diet isn’t that complicated to figure out, too. Pellets, sunflower seeds (oiled), fruits, and vegetables will keep them healthy and contented. Of course, food that will be fed to these birds should be cut in small portions whenever possible. Large portions will discourage them from feeding.

One of the most important things to remember when caging these birds is that you should avoid mixing them with other bird species. This is because they are territorial and will act immediately on those who will violate their claim for space. They bite but with proper training, it is possible to correct this behavior.

With current knowledge about parrotlets, breeding them even at home has become possible. There are local breeders and pet shops that can supply interested individuals all year round. With proper care and attention to health and nutrition, owners can expect these birds to live for 15 to 20 years.

The Beautiful Dilute Turquoise Parrotlet

In this article, we are going to speak about and discuss the dilute turquoise parrotlet. The dilute turquoise is a beautiful parrotlet with many variations of them that are comprised of three genes. The first is a blue gene, the second is a turquoise gene and third is the yellow gene. These parrotlets are not found in the wild and must be created by breeders using artificial selection. The first one created was just under 20 years ago. The main reason you will never find them in the wild because of the turquoise gene. The turquoise gene is actually an incomplete blue gene. We now know this was created by a geneticist who has altered the blue gene. And through selective breeding techniques has created the blue turquoise parrotlet. This is why the turquoise gene is critical in today’s turquoise breeding techniques of all different types of turquoise parrotlets.

The genes in a dilute turquoise parrotlet are as follows, providing the bird is clean meaning no other genes or splits. Gene number one equals the yellow gene, gene number two equals the turquoise gene and gene number three equals the blue gene. The combination of these three genes will produce the dilute turquoise parrotlet. The dilute turquoise sometimes will be dominated by the yellow gene giving the bird a much more yellow appearance shaded by white throughout the body. The face may take on a more dominant yellow appearance. If it’s a male then the blue mail markings will be reduced from a sharp blue to a much softer blue. The dilute turquoise has beautiful plumage vivid and sometimes pastel light color throughout the body. Also, it’s a great bird to pair up with most other turquoise type parrotlets such as the turquoise pied parrotlets.

rare-dilute-turquoise-female-1051x720The dilute turquoise parrotlet can also be dominated by the turquoise gene. The turquoise gene will dominate with the turquoise color, giving the dilute turquoise a greenish color throughout the body rather than the yellow. This is just nature taking its course, the bird will have a darker greenish face rather than the yellow and a beautiful greenish tint throughout the body’s plumage. They may also have a white shading throughout the parrotlets body. This makes the dilute turquoise and absolutely beautiful bird. They will also make a great pairing for any other type of parrotlet. The male markings will not be the bright vivid blue you would usually find in a male parrotlet. It would be much softer blue mainly because of the yellow gene that is involved. In the female, there will be no blue mail markings of course giving you a much smoother dilute turquoise affect.

Now where is the blue gene that is involved in the dilute turquoise parrotlet? Is it used? You can’t see it on the dilute turquoise parrotlet, although it is mixed into the yellow gene and remember the blue gene and the turquoise gene which is an incomplete blue gene. But where in the finished product is this blue gene? It remains silent, it remains unseen. Not like it is present and seen in the dilute blue better known as the American white. It just remains silent and not seen in the dilute turquoise parrotlet which makes it one of natures mysteries. Xtreem parrotlet breeders have been breeding these particular parrotlets for the last 14 years.

We have taken the dilute turquoise parrotlet, and through many years of breeding, we have come up with several different versions of this bird. We now have the dilute turquoise pied, dilute turquoise fallow, dilute turquoise fallow pied, the dilute turquoise seafoam green version also in pied and also in fallow. We have also created dilute turquoise splits to fallow and much, much more. And we will keep working and breeding even more versions of the dilute turquoise parrotlets. As you can see from some of our pictures the different versions of the dilute turquoise parrotlets, they make great pets and our beautiful conversation pieces for pet owners to talk about. Also, they are great for breeding purposes you can pair them up with most any other parrotlet.
